Description

Vega F1 Papaya is a high-yielding hybrid papaya variety developed for early fruiting, uniform size, and exceptional sweetness. It produces medium to large, oval-shaped fruits with smooth yellow skin and deep orange-red flesh that is rich, firm, and flavorful.

This semi-dwarf hybrid begins fruiting within 7–9 months after transplanting, offering farmers faster returns and reliable productivity. Vega F1 demonstrates strong resistance to Papaya Ring Spot Virus (PRSV) and Powdery Mildew, ensuring healthy growth and consistent yields.

Well-suited for both smallholder and commercial farming, Vega F1 performs excellently under diverse Kenyan growing conditions and meets the high-quality standards required for local and export markets.

Growing Recommendations

Soil Preparation

  • Prefers well-drained, fertile sandy loam soils with a pH of 6.0–6.8.

  • Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged soils to prevent root rot.

Planting

  • Sow seeds in nursery trays or seedbeds and transplant when 15–20 cm tall (around 3–4 weeks old).

  • Spacing: 2.5 m × 2.5 m (approximately 600–700 plants per acre).

Fertilization

  • Apply NPK 20:10:10 or organic manure at planting.

  • Top dress with CAN or Urea during vegetative and fruiting stages for better growth.

Watering

  • Maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during flowering and fruiting.

  • Avoid excessive watering to reduce disease incidence.

Pest and Disease Control

  • Common pests: aphids, fruit flies, and whiteflies.

  • Use approved pesticides and fungicides as necessary to protect crops.

Harvesting & Yield

  • First harvest is typically 8–10 months after transplanting.

  • Average fruit weight ranges from 1.2–2.0 kg.

Post-Harvest Handling

  • Handle fruits carefully to prevent bruising.

  • Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
